Pro Sports Medicine is Cardiff’s leading Physiotherapy and Sports Medicine clinic, with an expanding reputation for excellence in sports injury treatment and rehabilitation. 

The team at Pro Sports Medicine has extensive experience in sports physiotherapy through a range of sports, including rugby union, football and netball at international level – as well as a range of other sports at recreational and elite level.

Daniel graduated from the University Of Wales College Of Medicine in 2003, with a BSc Honours degree in Physiotherapy. Throughout his career he has developed a broad range of clinical experience, from working with the general public to elite sports athletes.

He has previously worked in New Zealand, Australia and the U.K., with a specialist interest in musculoskeletal and sports medicine. Dan has completed a postgraduate MSc in Sports & Exercise Physiotherapy from Cardiff University, and a PgC in MSK Diagnostic Ultrasound from AAEC Bournemouth.

Daniel has worked with a number of professional sports teams including Worcester Warriors, Gloucester Rugby and the Welsh Rugby Union as Head Physiotherapist to the Wales National Sevens Squad.

Daniel is currently Head of Medical Services for Cardiff Rugby. Notably Daniel worked with the Wales Rugby National Squad for the 2021 Summer International series.


 

Dr Daniel Vaughan
Medical Director / Specialist Sports Doctor

Dr Vaughan is first team doctor for Galmorgan Cricket, Newport County Football Club and Cardiff Rugby, alongside being a Medical Officer to the British Boxing Board of Control.

Having completed undergraduate training in Exeter, he has worked within the UK and Australia where he further developed his sport and exercise interests with the Newcastle Knights & Manley Sea Eagles NRL teams.

Dr Vaughan has post-graduate qualifications in sport & exercise medicine and musculoskeletal ultrasound and has been awarded membership to the faculty of Sport and Exercise Medicine, Ireland.

He has a special interest in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of joint and soft tissue problems in elite athletes and the non-sporting population alike. He believes strongly in the use of sports medicine as a way to develop a strong and robust individual to achieve their aspirations – whether this be in sport, life or both.

He prides himself on providing bespoke, evidence based care, centred on the individual. He is proficient in MSK Ultrasound diagnostic imaging as well as using this to guide a variety of joint and soft tissue injections including as PRP, Ostenil and steroid injections. Dr Vaughan can request blood tests, imaging (like x-rays and MRI) and perform onward referral to his close network of specialists such as orthopaedic surgeons. He also leads our Concussion Management clinic at PSM.

Dr. Vaughan has a background as a semi-professional rugby and cricket player, gaining schoolboy honours for Wales in both sports. His current sporting and clinical interests include rugby, football, cricket, weightlifting, boxing, athletics and golf.

Alyson Matheson MCSP
Clinical Lead Physiotherapist 

Alyson graduated in Cardiff in 1987. She worked in the NHS for 22 years in numerous clinical and managerial roles across hospital trusts in South Wales.

Since 2009 Alyson has worked exclusively in private practice specialising in Musculoskeletal Medicine. She joined Pro Sports Medicine in 2015 and is currently our Clinical Lead Physiotherapist, managing our team of therapists and driving the clinical standards at our clinic.

Alyson specialises in spinal problems, sports injuries, complex conditions and occupational health / work related disorders. Alyson has completed many post graduate courses including Acupuncture and specific physiotherapeutic techniques to relieve pain and facilitate recovery.

Alyson has recently further expanded her expertise completing additional post-grad education in specialist paediatric physiotherapy, a service Alyson is developing at Pro Sports Medicine.

 


 

Carys Moggridge MCSP AACP
Chartered Physiotherapist

Carys graduated with a Bsc Honours Degree in Physiotherapy from Plymouth University in 2009. She has a specialist interest in musculoskeletal physiotherapy and started working in private practice treating both general public and semi-professional sports athletes in Wales in 2010, before moving to London in 2014.

In London she worked as a Senior Physiotherapist within a private practice on Harley Street. Here she was specialising in performing arts and dance physiotherapy on multiple west end shows, touring performances and performing arts and drama schools; including Italia Conti and RADA.

Notably Carys worked as the Senior Physiotherapist on Strictly Come Dancing for 3 years and in 2016-2017 she travelled with Coldplay on their recent world tour as their Lead Physiotherapist.

Carys is trained in APPI pilates teaching and acupuncture. She has a particular interest in sports rehabilitation within a variety of sports, alongside experience with pre and post-surgical care. She is also a registered practitioner of the British association of performing arts medicine (BAPAM).

Carys returned to Wales in 2018 to continue her career progression within professional sports physiotherapy joining the Pro Sports Medicine team alongside her role with Pro 14 team Scarlets Rugby. Notably Carys now works with the Wales National Rugby Squad.

 


 

Conor Dunleavy MCSP
Chartered Physiotherapist

Conor graduated from Cardiff University with a First Class Honours degree in 2018… He began his Physiotherapy career in the NHS where he gained experience working in a number of different areas, including intensive care and trauma & orthopaedics, before he became a Senior Musculoskeletal Physiotherapist.

Conor has a keen interest in Sports Physiotherapy, and worked as a Pathway Physiotherapist in the WRU, alongside his full time role in the NHS until 2021, when he was named Lead Physiotherapist of the Wales Men’s National 7s Rugby Team.

During his time as Lead Physiotherapist of Wales 7s, Conor supported the team at both the Rugby World Cup 7s, and the 2022 Commonwealth Games with Team Wales.

Conor now works as First Team Physiotherapist at Cardiff Rugby where he has gained a wealth of experience in treating elite athletes, and providing advanced sports injury rehab.

Cara Jones MCSP
Chartered Physiotherapist

Cara graduated with a BSc Honours degree in physiotherapy from Robert Gordon University in 2014. After graduating Cara worked in the NHS for two years gaining experience in many different areas of physiotherapy. In 2016 she started working in private practice specialising in musculoskeletal medicine working with both the general public, amateur and semi-professional athletes.

Cara has a specialist interest in sport injury rehabilitation and management. She has worked with the Scotland National Futsal team and has been part of the physiotherapy team for numerous Badminton World Federation. Cara is now Physiotherapist to the Wales Women National Rugby Squad

Cara has relocated to Wales to study an MSc in Sport & Exercise Physiotherapy at Cardiff University, alongside working with the team at Pro Sports Medicine.

 


 

Jo Perkins Msc MCSP POGP 
Womens Health Specialist Physiotherapist

Jo graduated from Cardiff university in 2005 with a 1st class BSc (hons) degree in Physiotherapy. She has always had a passion for sports and so after 5 years working for the NHS she left to work in professional rugby. 

Jo specialised in rehabilitation and injury prevention at the Scarlets RFC where she worked until 2018 whilst also completing her MSc in Sports Medicine with a merit.

 

After having her 2 children, Jo decided to specialise in female health and developed a special interest in female performance and postnatal rehabilitation and worked in private practise for 2 years.

She is co founder of online female fitness and rehabilitation www.theglowmethodathome.com and continues to be involved in various research projects aiming to improve the support for female athletes. Jo is also Pilates and acupuncture trained.

Completing various specialist courses in all aspects of female health and performance, Jo went on to work for the women’s Welsh national rugby squad where she been Head of Medical since 2022 when they became professional. Notably Jo has recently written the World Rugby postnatal guidelines, demonstrating her standing as a leader in the field on the world stage.  

 


 

Izzy Webb MCSP 
Chartered Physiotherapist

Izzy graduated from Cardiff University in 2019 with a first class Bsc honours in Physiotherapy. Izzy combines working at Pro Sports Medicine with working as a physiotherapist for the Cardiff and Vale University NHS Health Board. She is passionate about providing the most up-to-date and evidence based physiotherapy treatment to achieve individual goals whether it be pain or performance related. 

Izzy has experience in a variety of different fields including trauma and orthopaedics, medicine and respiratory treating people with a variety of conditions and of different age groups. She has a particular interests in post operative rehabilitation, exercise prescription and injury prevention. 

Izzy is an elite level hockey player in the English National league, playing for Clifton Robinsons first team. Of note she also plays hockey for Wales and therefore has first hand experience and knowledge of what it takes to manage injuries and training load in elite athletes.

Mr Andrew Miller MB BCh BSc MSc MD FRCS (Orth)
Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon

Mr Andrew Miller is a very well respected and sought after Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon working in South Wales with a special interest in hip and knee problems such as trauma and arthritis. At Pro Sports Medicine he is part of the senior clinical team and brings a wealth of experience overseeing quality control in his specialty interest of hip and knee conditions.

Mr Andrew Miller is available for virtual and / or face to face consultations. He can provide minimally invasive regenerative treatments (inc injections), hip and knee replacements, revision procedures and second opinions at our Cardiff HQ.

Andrew is a keen sportsman who played rugby for Worcester RFC and represented England at junior levels. His boat crew won the Nottingham national rowing championships and more recently was selected to represent Great Britain in the 2016 European Powerlifting Championships.

Mr Andrew Miller studied Medicine at Cardiff University obtaining his Medical degree in 2008 and returned to complete his Doctorate in Cartilage Tissue Engineering in 2019. He completed his orthopaedic training in the UK and Australia before going on to specialise in Hip and Knee surgery.

Mr Andrew Miller has undertaken the prestigious Bristol Advanced Hip fellowship as well as being nationally selected as the TIG Major Trauma fellow to work alongside the military at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham. He also received a fellowship from the OTA to work overseas in Tampa, USA. There he worked alongside top USA trauma surgeons and honed his surgical skills in the use of the latest robotic joint replacement surgery techniques. In fact Mr Miller recently completed the first robotic knee replacement on a client from Pro Sports Medicine.

Sophie Jones
Counsellor & Psychotherapist 

Sophie Jones is a qualified Counsellor and Psychotherapist having studied at the University of South Wales in Newport.  Sophie also has over 20 years clinical experience as a Registered Nurse in the NHS.  She has spent most of her career working on Critical Care and is a Bereavement Support Volunteer for Cruse in her spare time.

Sophie’s approach to Counselling is Integrative which means she can bring different elements of specific therapeutic approaches together to suit your individual needs and circumstances. For example, you may wish to seek help with anxiety, or maybe you are experiencing a major life transition such as divorce or bereavement. Together, we can explore your concerns and areas of difficulty within a time frame that works for you.  

She is a member of the BACP (British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy) and adheres to their ethical guidelines.  She undertakes regular clinical professional development and participate in clinical supervision.

 


 

Dr Dale Thomas
Clinical & Sports Psychologist 

Dr Thomas holds a doctorate in clinical psychology (DClinPsy) and a masters in applied Sport and Exercise Psychology. He specialises in performance psychology for elite populations and high pressured environments. 

His experience includes working with elite athletes and he is currently working full time with the Welsh National Rugby team focussing mainly on performance psychology. His role also includes providing clinical psychological support for the four professional rugby regions across Wales. 

Dr Thomas also has experience of working with professionals that operate in high pressured environments such as neurosurgery and corporate businesses. Key skills such as formulation, psycho-education and specialist psychological therapy are key to his practice. Positive psychology and Acceptance and commitment therapy are central in his ethos.

 


 

Dr Geoff Davies
Consultant Sports Physician

Dr Geoff Davies is a full time Consultant Sports Physician dividing his time between professional rugby, the NHS and the Ministry of Defence. Dr Davies is the Welsh Rugby Union national team doctor and is the only Cardiff based consultant Sports Physician, one of only 2 such specialists in Wales. 

Dr Davies provides private services at the Vale Healthcare Clinic in Cardiff Bay. He is also director of his own sports medicine company, Cardiff Sports Medicine Services Ltd – www.drgeoffdavies.com 

 


 

Mr Chris Wilson
Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon 

Mr Chris Wilson is a Consultant Orthopaedic Knee Surgeon. Mr Wilson is innovative and is experienced in the newer techniques of stem cell grafting for articular cartilage defects, meniscal repair and transplantation, arthroscopic ligament reconstruction, computer-guided knee replacement, partial knee replacement and re-alignment osteotomy.

He has developed several novel techniques and has published these in specialist medical journals, along with other related research. He is active in teaching , training and assessing junior doctors and trainee surgeons and teaches on courses locally, and at the Royal College of Surgeons. He has lectured at national and international meetings. Mr Richard Evans
Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon 

As the lead specialist and founder of Cardiff Shoulder Clinic, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, Mr Richard Evans has 20 years of experience in shoulder care and understands the impact shoulder pain, stiffness and weakness can have on your daily life.

Mr Evans’ extensive experience in keyhole surgery (known as arthroscopic surgery) ensures patients benefit from quicker recovery times and a better healthcare experience. Richard is an Honorary Surgeon to the Welsh Rugby Union and Cardiff Blues, and a member of the British Elbow and Shoulder Society. Mr Rhys Thomas
Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon 

Mr Rhys Thomas is a specialist in adult foot and ankle surgery.  He has extensive experience in this field, having been a Consultant Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Surgeon for over 12 years.

Mr Thomas regularly treats sporting injuries and this is recognised by being a Fellow of the Faculty of Sports and Exercise Medicine.  He is Honorary Surgeon to the Welsh Rugby Union, Cardiff Blues Rugby and Cardiff City Football Club.  He also treats players from across the Welsh rugby regions and other sporting disciplines.

Mr Thomas has a keen interest in research and teaching.  He is an Honorary Senior Research Fellow at Cardiff University and has published in several peer-reviewed journals.  He teaches and lectures on the MSc in Sports Medicine at Cardiff Met and the MSc in Orthopaedic Engineering at Cardiff University.  He also teaches on the British Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society clinical course and is co-organiser of the Royal College of Surgery Core Skills in Orthopaedics course.

 


 

Mr Phil Thomas
Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon 

Mr Phil Thomas, a recognised hip specialist, is a Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon and Honorary University Lecturer at the University of Wales Hospital, Cardiff. Alongside his private orthopaedic practice at Vale Healthcare, Mr Thomas specialises in paediatric and adult hip disorders. This ranges from babies born with hip problems through to the elderly with hip arthritis.

As a result of his paediatric hip interest, he specialises in young adult hip disorders, many of which are a consequence of childhood hip problems. Mr Thomas is trained to offer the vast majority of hip surgery procedures including hip arthroscopy, hip osteotomy, minimally invasive hip replacements and traditional hip replacements. 

Mr Thomas also has expertise in treating elite and professionals athletes with hip problems and is the orthopaedic surgeon for the Llanelli Scarlets rugby team. He is also orthopaedic surgeon to the senior Wales national rugby team. 

 


 

Mr David Pemberton
Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon 

Mr David Pemberton is a private Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at the Royal Glamorgan Hospital and Vale Healthcare, Royal Glamorgan Hospital, South Wales. Mr Pemberton practices from both the Vale Hospital and Cardiff Bay Clinic, and has a special interest in lower limb surgery particularly knee surgery. He is Honorary Orthopaedic Surgeon to the Welsh Rugby Union, and Pontypridd RFC. Mr Pemberton is also honorary surgeon to professional welsh ice hockey side the Cardiff Devils.

Sports injuries however are only a small part of Mr Pemberton’s clinical practice, with the majority of patients requiring intervention for degenerative conditions, in particular knee cartilage tears and arthritis. Despite specialising in knee surgery, Mr Pemberton still performs a lot of hip replacement surgery’s and indeed is one of the pioneers of ceramic bearing hip implants in Wales. He is now pioneering the utilisation of inter-positional implants for early knee arthritis in young, active patients and dual compartment replacements for knee arthritis preserving the patient’s own cruciate ligaments.

 


 

Mr Stuart Roy
Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon

Mr Stuart Roy is a consultant in trauma and orthopaedic surgery at the Royal Glamorgan Hospital, Llantrisant, with a sub-speciality interest in lower limb surgery. He is the lead clinician of the orthopaedic department for the Cwm Taff Trust. In addition to this Mr Roy also holds the role of honorary senior lecturer at the Cardiff University School of Medicine.

Mr Roy has broad experience in most aspects of trauma and has expertise in lower limb surgery including total hip replacement and all aspects of knee surgery, and surgery of the foot and ankle. Mr Roy is very active in rugby and represented Wales from a schoolboy level up to senior international level. He played for Cardiff RFC, Cambridge University and Pontypridd RFC as well as gaining full Wales International honours.

Mr Alwyn Jones BSc, MSc, FRCS, FRSC (Orth)
Consultant Orthopaedic & Spinal Surgeon

Mr Jones is a welsh speaker graduating from Cardiff in 1993. He stayed in Wales to do his basic and orthopaedic training. He spent a year in Queen’s Medical Centre, Nottingham, where he completed a nationally recognised spinal fellowship, treating both adult and paediatric spinal conditions. He has now been a Consultant Spinal Surgeon in Cardiff for a number of years, where he treats all spinal conditions including adult and paediatric deformity (scoliosis), neck and arm pain, back pain and sciatica.

Mr Jones has performed over 300 major cases and between 400-500 injections per year. He also treats spinal fractures with or without spinal cord injury, spinal infections, as well as patients with rheumatoid arthritis. He has an interest in sports medicine and treats local players from Cardiff Rugby, Glamorgan Cricket Club and Cardiff City FC

Joanne Nicholls
Practice Manager

Joanne Nicholls has recently joined our team at Pro Sports Medicine as our new Practice Manager. Jo has over 30 years experience of private healthcare having worked firstly at BUPA Hospital Cardiff (now Spire), and then in 2001 she assisted the directors to set up the successful Vale Clinic which went on to become the Cardiff & Vale Nuffield Hospital. 

Jo has supported various clinicians and consultants as a PA in private practice, and is now looking forward to using her experience with Pro Sports Medicine to drive the clinic forward.

 


 

Lynne Ursell
Assistant Practice Manager 

Lynne joined the team in 2010 as Practice Manager, bringing with her a wealth of experience in accounts and business administration. 

Lynne is core to our operation and now assists Jo Nicholls, our new Practice Manager in leading the administration department
