Musculoskeletal (MSK) Diagnostic Ultrasound Service
Musculoskeletal ultrasound is an injury diagnosis assessment technique that uses sound waves to create images of muscles, tendons, ligaments and joints throughout the body.
Our specialist musculoskeletal sonogrophers perform all of our ultrasound services at our Cardiff clinic. We use diagnostic ultrasound examination of the following conditions:
Tendinopathy (patellar, achilles, tennis elbow, plantar fasciitis)
Muscle strains / tears
Shoulder rotator cuff injury / bursitis
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome / wrist pain
Ligament injuries
There are many benefits for MSK ultrasound over other imaging modalities:
Every patient can undergo sonography – There are no contraindications to sonography. Even patients with metal implants or cardiac implants can have an ultrasound (not possible with MRI). Ultrasound examinations are performed with the patient in a more comfortable position.
Allows real-time dynamic examination of the patient – Static imaging may does not show tissues and structures in movement, when pain and dysfunction may become present. during an ultrasound examination, the patient can perform dynamic movements that provoke pain, and clinicians can observe real-time how structures respond. Dynamic examinations can show changes in conditions such as shoulder impingement which would not show on a static MRI.
Facilitates quick bilateral comparison – Clinicians performing ultrasound examinations are able to quickly assess contralateral limbs to detect bilateral asymmetries, and evaluate if pathology exists or if it is simply down to anatomical variability.
Our sports and musculoskeletal specialists are fully trained in MSK diagnostic ultrasound. They will utilise this to complement their clinical findings to offer patients a more accurate diagnosis and therefore a more targeted treatment and rehabilitation plan.
