Arthrosamid® Injections for Knee Osteoarthritis in Cardiff
At Pro Sports Medicine, we offer Arthrosamid® Hydrogel Injections as part of our specialist Regenerative Medicine Clinic for patients suffering with knee osteoarthritis.
Delivered in partnership with Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon Mr Andrew Miller, Arthrosamid® is an advanced injectable hydrogel treatment designed to reduce knee pain, improve mobility and help patients stay active for longer without surgery.
For individuals struggling with ongoing knee pain, stiffness and reduced function, Arthrosamid® offers an innovative alternative to repeated steroid injections or early knee replacement surgery.
What is Arthrosamid®?
Arthrosamid® is an innovative injectable hydrogel implant developed specifically for the treatment of knee osteoarthritis (OA).

Unlike traditional injections that are gradually broken down and absorbed by the body, Arthrosamid® is a non-biodegradable hydrogel consisting of 97.5% water and 2.5% cross-linked polyacrylamide. Once injected into the knee joint, it integrates within the synovial lining of the joint capsule, creating a cushioning effect that can reduce pain and improve knee function for several years.
The treatment is designed to provide long-lasting symptom relief from mild to moderate knee osteoarthritis and may help delay the need for surgical intervention.
How Does Arthrosamid® Work?
Knee osteoarthritis causes degeneration of joint cartilage alongside irritation and inflammation within the joint lining (synovium).
Arthrosamid® works differently from steroid or hyaluronic acid injections.
Following injection, the hydrogel becomes integrated into the synovial membrane, helping to:
- Cushion the knee joint
- Improve lubrication
- Reduce friction within the joint
- Decrease inflammation
- Improve mobility and function
- Reduce pain during daily activities
Because the hydrogel remains within the joint tissue, symptom relief can be significantly longer lasting than many conventional injection therapies.
Clinical studies have demonstrated sustained improvements in pain and function beyond two years, with emerging evidence showing benefits extending up to five years in selected patients.
Who is Arthrosamid® Suitable For?
Arthrosamid® may be appropriate for patients who:
- Have mild to moderate knee osteoarthritis
- Experience ongoing knee pain and stiffness
- Wish to remain active and delay surgery
- Have not achieved adequate relief from physiotherapy, exercise or medication
- Have previously had steroid or hyaluronic acid injections with limited long-term benefit
- Are not currently ready for knee replacement surgery
Every patient attending our Regenerative Medicine Clinic undergoes a comprehensive assessment to determine whether Arthrosamid® is the most appropriate treatment option.
What Happens During the Procedure?
At Pro Sports Medicine, Arthrosamid® injections are performed by Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon Mr Andrew Miller.
The procedure is carried out as a simple outpatient treatment and typically takes around 15–30 minutes.
Your treatment will include:
- Clinical assessment and suitability review
- Local anaesthetic to improve comfort
- Ultrasound-guided injection into the knee joint
- Short observation period before discharge
Patients are usually able to return home shortly after treatment and can resume light activities within the following days.
